Luthier du quatuor

Like a true artist, Sylvain Tournaire makes instruments that will create the most beautiful sounds.

Know-how

"I started luthiery by tuning cords and cutting easels."

Fascinated by travel and the art of craftsmanship, Sylvain Tournaire quickly fell in love with woodworking. After several years spent exploring the world, he returned to France, to Grenoble, where he met luthier Pascal Lavigne, and became his apprentice.

In 2008, he was admitted to the Mittenwald International School of Violin Making in Bavaria where he trained with Ulrich Hinsberger (gold medalist luthier at the international competitions in Cremona, Paris, Beijing...).

For his diploma, he made a violin inspired by A. Stradivarius' "Viotti" 1709, for which he received the jury's praise. He then perfected his skills in the restoration of old instruments at the Goldfuss workshop in Regensburg.

A Studio dedicated to the making

Back from Germany in 2013, he fulfilled his dream by opening his own workshop dedicated to the creation of modern and baroque instruments. Born in Carcassonne, he chose the calm of nature and settled in the Pyrenees to combine his passion for the mountains and lutherie. He gained more experience by working with luthiers Patrick Robin and Robert Brewer Young.

In September 2018, he opened his workshop at 20 Rue de l'espérance in Paris, where he was regularly visited by chamber music players, soloists and orchestral musicians. At 34 and after only 5 years in business, his instruments are played all over the world (Orchestre de Paris, Opera d'Helsinky, Milan, Munich, Santiago de Chili...), the richness of their sound and the ease of playing showing more and more the reputation of a very high quality work.

Sylvain Tournaire is a laureate of the Fondation Banque Populaire pour les métiers d'arts in 2014, 2015 and 2017, and a member of the "Fondazione Antonio Stradivari". In 2019, he was appointed luthier at the Académie Jaroussky at the Seine Musicale.

He also offers various antique bows for sale and is at your disposal for the adjustment of your stringed instruments.
